Chocolate at The Cherry on the Top

Just spent 3 days attending an advanced wedding and celebration cake course at a fantastic cookery school in Manchester called Slatterly's. Our group of 10 students learned how to create fantastic cakes with moulded chocolate, fans, cigarillos, wraps, chocolate dominos and ruffles. It was well worth the 5 hour journey and I can't wait to practise. Keep an eye on the website for the new designs!

Chagford Show

Despite a wet start we had a great day at the Chagford show. We sold out of most cakes especially the chocolate ones! We will definitely be back next year. See the Chagford show website for pictures.

Chagford Show

Despite the wet start the Chagford show proved to be a fantastic well attended event. We pretty much sold out by the end of the day especially anything chocolate related!
Thanks to the ladies on the Curworthy Cheese stall next door who were so helpful and a mine of information about other events. We'll definitely be back next year. Visit the Chagford show website for all the photos.

Chagford Show

Only 5 baking days until the Chagford show on Thursday 18th August. The next few days are going to be hectic. We've added a few new items to our repetoire since our last show in Cardiff. As well as our delicious range of cupcakes we'll be taking along whoopie pies, cookies, iced biscuits, cake pops, large fondant iced cakes and novelty cup cakes like the ones in the picture below.
Hope to see you at the show!

Why send a card when you can say it with a biscuit! Above is a picture of some biscuits I did for a gift for a wedding couple. The biscuits are a rich shortbread topped with fondant icing which will keep sealed for a couple of months. Using biscuits to send a message is a lovely idea and so versatile. They can be used for any occasion and make great place name cards for weddings and parties. They can even be used to promote your business - ever thought of business biscuit cards?

It's a hamster!

One of my latest projects was to create a hamster cake for a 10th birthday celebration. I didn't want to go for a flat cake so decided to make a 3D design by carving a body and head so that the figure stood up. This proved very challenging as the weight of the cake meant I had to prop it up to stop it leaning or worse still the head falling off. I had great fun creating a furry coat and painting in the same colours as Lili's pet hamster.

Experimental Cookies
On August 18th I have a stall at Chagford Show on Dartmoor. I've done shows before but not any of the smaller village shows, so I thought I'd give this one a go. Most village or agricultural shows now have a food hall marquee which reflects the increasing interest the public has in food and buying from local sources. In the past I've mostly produced cupcakes for these events but as happens sometimes, the cupcake seems to be in decline. For this event I've decided to try cookies. I've spent some time perfecting the iced biscuits and now need to expand my range. Hence the experimentation. Trawl through the internet and you'll find hundreds, probably thousands of recipes for different chocolate chip cookies and variations. In search of the perfect recipe I have been baking furiously and will be conducting a taste test with friends and family. I've already got the perfect Chocolate Crackle Cookie (thanks Martha Stewart!) and Snickerdoodle recipes. The only problem I have is that I keep having to taste them!
The Chagford show looks like being a good event so I hope to see you there. http://www.chagfordshow.com/

Hello and welcome to my first ever blog! I'll try to give you a taste (metaphorically!) of what 'The Cherry on the Top' is all about and keep you posted about what the future holds.
The business was started at the beginning of this year as a result of spending more and more time doing cakes for friends and family. Before I had children I used to do a lot of wedding and birthday cakes but never actually set up as a business and went off to work in a 'normal' job. I decided I needed a change and have been building the business over the past few months and setting up a website to show people what I can do. Things have changed a lot since when I first did wedding cakes - they were almost all rich fruit cakes with royal icing. Now there are so many new ingredients, colours and decoration techniques. It's been a big learning curve and each cake is a new adventure! As well as the large cakes I've also been making biscuits, cupcakes and cake pops. You never know what the next new trend will be, but that's what makes sugar decoration so exciting
Check out the website to view some of my most recent projects.
